IFL Steroid Policy

By: MMAStation

In and article published by MMAWeekly Kurt Otto , commissioner of the IFL, stated the IFL would be announcing its new steroid policy in the coming months.

I believe most fans would agree it is a greatly needed step in the history of MMA. Promoters can not continue to only allow the state athletic commissions to oversee their drug testing.

Too many fighter have tested positive for steroids, including Sean Sherkand Hermes Franca, champion and challenger, from UFC 73’s lightweight title fight. Even the great Royce Gracie recently tested positive.

The numbers are on the rise and it doesn’t appear that testing 2-4 fighters a card is much of a deterrent, as it leaves you normally with a 20% of being tested. Although the California State Athletic Commission should be changing some minds with the 1 year suspensions handed out to Franca and Sherk.

We should all hope that the UFC would actually take a cue from the IFL on one thing, and that’s to take a pro-active approach to drug testing. Do not simply sit back and watch as this young, great sport gets a big black eye from all the steroid attention.
