LAWLER RUTHLESS INDEED, JUDGES EVEN MORE VICIOUS

Robbie Lawler defeated Murillo “ninja” Rua via a devastating TKO, and Nick Diaz won an extremely controversial decision in the two headline fights at Saturday nights Elite XC Uprising event.

In the main event Lawler and Rua stood toe to toe for two and a half rounds and fought the most exciting main event in the promotions short history. It was an action packed fight which outside of a couple Rua shoot attempts took place with both fighters trading punches and kicks for the entire bout. No doubt this style of fight would be perfectly fine with Lawler, and it was. There were times in the fight were both fighters appeared to be in trouble but in the end it was Lawler landing multiple big right hand uppercuts and a crippling right hook which floored Rua. Lawler immediately pounced on him connecting with punches and some ruthless elbows until referee Steve Mazzagatti stepped in and stopped the fight at 2:04 of the round 3 resulting in Lawler becoming the new Elite XC middleweight champion.

For an organization which has had some controversial and some flat out boring main events, this fight was hands down there best so far. It had everything that MMA fans look for in a fight, great back and forth exchanges and a crowd thrilling thunderous knockout.

In the other big fight of the evening Nick Diaz took on hometown favorite Mike Aina. From the outset two things were obvious, one being that Aina was looking to try to end this fight with one big shot, which he nearly did, and that Diaz was not too worried about fighting Aina, and it turned out that he should have been. In the first round both fighters seemed comfortable to keep the fight on their feet and feel each other out. Throughout the round Aina got the better of the standup and seemed to hurt Diaz a couple of times and it seemed pretty obvious that he had one the round. Round 2 started with a bang as Aina caught Diaz with a big shot which dropped him but Aina, who already appeared to be tiring, could not finish him off. The rest of the round consisted of both fighters trading punches with Diaz using his reach advantage to keep Aina away as best he could. Any time the Hawaiian fighter staged an attack from here on out he had to earn it as the long lanky Diaz began to use reach advantage and was peppering him with jabs. Round 2 ended with Diaz nearly sinking in a rear naked choke but ran out of time and it appeared Aina had at the worst one the round 10-9, but possibly 10-8 with the knockdown. In round 3 both fighters, who were each cut and good and swelled up on the face, continued to trade punches and kicks. Towards the end of the round Diaz managed to get the fight to the ground, where it was believed he had a large advantage, but the newcomer held his own and was able to ward off an arm bar attempt as the fight ended.

Diaz looked as if he thought there was no way that he could lose this fight. Even after being dropped early in round 2, which for most fighters would be a wakeup call, he continued to nonchalantly go through the motions. One would think that a fighter who is running out of organizations to fight for would go out and fight his tail off and put on a great show. When the decision was announced the crowd groaned and booed in disbelief. It appeared to everyone that Aina had one at least 2 if not all 3 of the rounds, and maybe of even won the second round 10-8. One of the judges scored the fight 30-27 in favor of Diaz, which is ridiculous. How he possibly could of had Diaz winning all 3 rounds was one thing, but to have him winning round 2 after being knocked down and nearly finished is criminal. Even if he had controlled the rest of the round, which he didn’t at the worst it should have been a 9-9 scoring in with Diaz winning the round but only breaking even with the knockdown. This fight was one of the worse decisions I have ever seen, even worse than last week’s robbery of Matt Hamill in London. This was an example of how the guy you never heard of is at a major disadvantage and basically needs to finish a fight and not leave it in the judge’s hands.
